MONET Inspires Young Soccer Players with Materials Science in DC

On October 14, 2023, MONET researchers from Rebekka Klausen's group at Johns Hopkins University conducted two engaging outreach events through DC Way, reaching a total of 200 young soccer players aged 4-7. Herbert Wakefield IV and Kelsie Wentz led hands-on activities exploring the materials science behind soccer balls, sparking curiosity and enthusiasm for STEM among the participants.

MONET Inspires Young Soccer Players with Materials Science in DC

MONET's commitment to inspiring the next generation of scientists was on full display during two outreach events conducted through DC Way on October 14, 2023. Researchers from Rebekka Klausen's group at Johns Hopkins University, Herbert Wakefield IV and Kelsie Wentz, led engaging hands-on activities that introduced young soccer players to the fascinating world of materials science.

The first event, held at Brentwood Field, was led by Herbert Wakefield IV and supported by Kelsie Wentz. They engaged 100 participants aged 4-5 in interactive explorations of the materials that make up soccer balls. The second event, held at Eliot-Hine Middle School, was led by Kelsie Wentz and supported by Herbert Wakefield IV, reaching another 100 students aged 6-7.

Through these outreach efforts, the MONET researchers were able to connect with young soccer enthusiasts, demonstrating the real-world applications of materials science in a context that resonated with the participants. By providing hands-on experiences and fostering curiosity, the events aimed to inspire a love for STEM and encourage the participants to consider careers in science and engineering.

The success of the outreach events was captured in photographs showcasing the MONET trainees engaging with the young participants. While the children's parents had signed photo release waivers with the DC Way soccer team, the researchers took care to include only images featuring the MONET trainees to ensure privacy and respect for the participants.
