Industry Connections and Trainee Development

The U.S. National Science Foundation Center for Chemical Innovation known as NSF MONET has moved from building a network of industrial contacts to convening that network in the same room as its trainees.


In August 2026, NSF MONET launched its Industry Advisory Board (IAB) in Chicago with six inaugural member companies spanning the polymer and polymer-network sectors: Dow, BASF, Arkema, CoSTAR, Eastman, and SEKISUI CHEMICAL.

Each member is represented by a senior technical leader, and each has committed to reviewing and advising on the center's technology and intellectual property portfolio, and to participating in trainee professional development:


The board builds on a documented record of industry engagement rather than starting from zero. NSF MONET has cultivated relationships with more than 25 organizations spanning chemical manufacturers, medical device firms, materials specialists, and research institutions.


Center research has produced multi-institutional provisional patent filings across Duke, MIT, and Johns Hopkins collaborations, covering vaccine delivery hydrogels, ROMP synthesis methods, and carbosilane crosslinkers for enhanced polymer durability.


On the data side, BigSMILES became the first line notation to capture the stochastic structure of polymers and spun off into CRIPT, the Community Resource for Informatic Polymer Technology, an open-source ecosystem now adopted by industry partners.

For trainees, the IAB functions as an on-ramp rather than an audience.


NSF MONET's trainee development runs on Signature Professional Development Experiences (SPDEs): trainee-chosen deep dives across scientific breadth, innovation and entrepreneurship, outreach and communication, and scientific leadership, each mentored and each expected to produce a documented output. As of Fall 2025, trainees had completed more than 100 documented SPDEs against an initial Phase II target of roughly 26, with innovation the single largest category.


That appetite is where the IAB matters most: standing relationships with senior technical leaders at six companies create a realistic pipeline for new innovation-track SPDEs such as industrial internships, tech-transfer fellowships, and IP landscape work mentored by an external partner.


Recent programming shows what happens when industry exposure is structured and measured. Nine trainees completed a four-session Technology Commercialization Bootcamp with Duke's Innovation & Entrepreneurship office, raising average commercialization confidence from 2.7 to 6.8 out of 10 and familiarity with commercialization tools from 1.5 to 3.6 out of 5, a 140% increase, with the largest gains in customer discovery, market segmentation, and market sizing.


A center career panel featuring industry leaders and returning alumni reached 30 trainees who completed matched pre- and post-assessments: 83% reported stronger understanding of career paths in chemistry and materials science and 93% rated the session at least moderately valuable.
